Before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have suffered another major blow. Australia’s emerging seam-bowling all-rounder Jack Edwards has been ruled out of the entire tournament due to a leg injury. The 25-year-old Edwards was bought by Hyderabad for ₹3 crore in the last auction.

Edwards was set to make his IPL debut this season, but now he will have to wait until next year. He was the only uncapped (having not played any international matches) overseas player bought in the 2025 auction. However, after the auction, he made his international debut for Australia.

Jack Edwards earned his spot after an outstanding performance in the BBL. He played brilliantly for the Sydney Sixers in the 2025–26 Big Bash League season, taking 19 wickets and scoring 133 runs in 13 matches. It was this performance that earned him a hefty price at the IPL auction.

Injury Woes Hit Sunrisers Hyderabad: Edwards and Cummins to Miss IPL 2026

Just four days after the BBL final, he made his T20 International debut for Australia against Pakistan in Perth. However, the match was not memorable for him, as he conceded 25 runs in 2 overs and scored only 5 runs with the bat.

Edwards’ absence is a double blow for Hyderabad. The team’s regular captain, Pat Cummins, will also be unavailable for the initial matches as he recovers from a back injury. In his absence, the team management has handed the captaincy to Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan. Kishan will lead Hyderabad in this season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad will begin their campaign on March 28. In the season opener, they will face defending champions Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The team is now searching for a replacement for Jack Edwards, and an announcement is expected soon.

Jack Edwards’ injury has added to the concerns of Cricket Australia (CA). Ahead of IPL 2026, several of Australia’s leading fast bowlers are struggling with injuries. Before Edwards, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Nathan Ellis have either been ruled out of the season entirely or will be unavailable for the initial matches. Pat Cummins is also part of this list.
