New Delhi: In a move aimed at benefiting poor families, the Delhi government has announced the distribution of free sugar for 15 months under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana. The decision was approved by the cabinet led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. To ensure better hygiene and quality, the government has decided to distribute branded, packaged sugar instead of loose sugar. The initiative is intended to provide relief to economically weaker sections while maintaining cleanliness and food safety standards.
Marking the beginning of the New Year, the Delhi government has taken a major decision to provide relief to the poor and marginalized sections of society. In a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, approval was given to a proposal to distribute one kilogram of branded, packaged sugar free of cost every month to Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) cardholders. The benefit will be provided for a total period of 15 months, from January 2026 to March 2027.
Under this scheme, around 65,883 Antyodaya families in Delhi will directly benefit. Each eligible family will be provided one kilogram of sugar free of cost every month, supplied in sealed and standardized branded packets to ensure quality and hygiene.
Free Sugar to Be Provided for 15 Months
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, this step is significant in ensuring not only food security but also quality, hygiene, and transparency in distribution.
Earlier, loose sugar was distributed through fair price shops (ration shops), which often led to complaints related to dust, moisture, contamination, underweight quantities, and poor quality. Under the new system, the use of branded, packaged sugar will ensure accurate quantity and improved hygiene. The Delhi government already provides wheat and rice through ration cards, and with this initiative, free sugar will also be distributed for 15 months under the scheme.
Existing System to Continue for Now
The government has also clarified that distribution under the existing system will continue until the new tender for branded packets is finalized, ensuring that beneficiaries do not face any inconvenience.
Welfare of the Poor
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the welfare of the poor is the top priority of the Delhi government. She added that this decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, which emphasizes empowering the most vulnerable sections of society. The Delhi government has been steadily implementing public welfare schemes to bring this vision to the ground.
