Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed satisfaction over the marked improvement in the strife-torn state of Manipur, attributing it to the timely intervention of the central and state governments. In an interview with the Assam Tribune newspaper, PM Modi elucidated on the proactive measures undertaken to mitigate the conflict.

“We have dedicated our best resources and administrative machinery to resolving the conflict. Due to the timely intervention of the Government of India and the relentless efforts of the Government of Manipur, the situation in the state has witnessed a notable improvement,” PM Modi asserted.

Highlighting the pivotal role played by Home Minister Amit Shah, the Prime Minister revealed that Shah had camped in Manipur during the peak of the conflict, conducting over 15 meetings with various stakeholders to facilitate conflict resolution.

“The central government has consistently extended its support, as required by the state government. The process of relief and rehabilitation is ongoing. Remedial measures undertaken include a financial package for the relief and rehabilitation of people living in shelter camps in the state,” PM Modi added.

Despite the Prime Minister’s claims, the Opposition has vehemently criticized the government’s handling of the Manipur crisis, blaming it for the tense situation that has persisted in the state since the ethnic violence erupted in May last year. The Opposition had even moved a no-confidence motion against the BJP-led government, demanding a statement from the Prime Minister on the Manipur situation.

Eventually, PM Modi addressed the issue in Parliament, stating, “The entire country is with Manipur, and the Centre and state governments are working together to restore peace in the state.”

The ethnic clashes between the Kuki and Meitei tribal groups in Manipur have claimed nearly 200 lives since their inception on May 3, 2022. The violence initially erupted after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
