Trump said on Monday that a 10% additional tariff will be imposed from February 1 on goods imported from several European countries, including Denmark, France, Germany, the UK, and Norway.

In his determination to acquire Greenland, U.S. President Donald Trump has opened a front against European countries. Trump has warned that if no agreement is reached over Greenland, he will move forward with plans to impose 100 percent tariffs on European nations. Following this threat, the European Union (EU) has also adopted a tough stance.

European Commission Stands Firm Against Trump’s Greenland Plans

At the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called Trump’s move a major “mistake.” She clearly stated that the trade agreement reached between the United States and Europe in July last year must be respected. Speaking sarcastically, Ursula said, “Even in politics, a deal means a deal. When friends shake hands, it should count for something.”

Trump made it clear on Monday that starting February 1, an additional 10 percent tariff will be imposed on goods coming from several European countries, including Denmark, France, Germany, the UK, and Norway. Trump argues that Greenland should strategically be part of the United States, while Europe views this as a violation of sovereignty.

Amid rising tensions, Ursula indicated that Europe will now significantly increase its investment in the Arctic region and in Greenland. She made it clear that the EU stands with Denmark and the people of Greenland. She warned that the United States’ rigid stance would only give a strategic advantage to their common adversaries.
