A fleet of UAE F-16 fighter jets escorted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plane on Friday as it entered the Gulf nation’s airspace.
During his meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, PM Modi expressed his gratitude, saying, “The way your Air Force escorted me today is an honor for the people of India. We’ve been talking on the phone for quite some time, but I was very eager to meet you in person. I’m delighted to meet you today.”
Squadron Leader had Asked for Permission to Escort
As soon as the plane carrying PM Modi entered UAE airspace, a formation of military aircraft welcomed him, UAE’s state news agency reported.
The agency further reported that as part of this special gesture of welcome, the Squadron Leader had sought official permission to escort the PM’s aircraft to the airport.
President Accorded a Grand Welcome at Abu Dhabi Airport
Reflecting the deep friendship and strong ties between the two countries, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed himself received PM Modi at the airport.
Regarding this warm welcome, PM Modi wrote on social media that I thank my brother His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for this special gesture of welcoming me at Abu Dhabi airport.
It should be noted that PM Modi is making this brief visit to the UAE as part of the first leg of his five-nation tour, which also includes four European countries. Upon his arrival in the UAE, the Prime Minister was accorded a ceremonial welcome with full state honors.
