US vs Greenland: President Donald Trump is determined to acquire Greenland at any cost and has begun preparations. Amid warnings from European and NATO countries and protests from the people of Greenland, the U.S. has started deploying military aircraft there.
U.S. President Donald Trump has begun preparations to take control of Greenland. He has ordered the deployment of U.S. troops, with military aircraft stationed at the Pituffik Army Base, soon to reach their locations. Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Baesent has issued a strong warning to Europe regarding retaliatory tariffs worth billions on the U.S. over Greenland.
Questions Arise Over Military Deployment in Greenland
According to the North American Aerospace Defense Command, under President Trump’s orders, troops and military aircraft have been dispatched to Greenland. The Greenland government had already been informed about this deployment. Meanwhile, amid Trump’s threat to take over Greenland, European unity is being mocked while they have taken on the responsibility of defending Greenland from the U.S., they reportedly lack the courage to confront America in the UK.
Seven Countries’ Forces Also Deployed in Greenland
It should be noted that in Greenland, only a single soldier has been sent under the name of security deployment, while seven European countries have already stationed 40 troops. NATO countries including Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the UK have launched a joint military operation called ‘Operation Arctic Endurance.’ However, Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has called the NATO and European military presence in Greenland a joke.
US Treasury Secretary Warns European Countries
Amid orders for troop deployment in Greenland, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Baesent warned European governments on Monday not to take retaliatory action against any steps the U.S. takes regarding the Greenland dispute, calling such a move extremely unwise. Speaking to journalists during the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos, Baesent dismissed the possibility of European retaliatory tariffs.
Tariff Threats Increase Pressure on Europe
Trump has threatened broad tariffs on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland starting at 10% from February 1 and rising to 25% by June until the U.S. is allowed to purchase Greenland. He stated that these measures will remain in place until an agreement is reached.
