In a significant turn of events in the cricketing world, Sri Lanka’s all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga found himself suspended from the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh, while Bangladesh suffered a setback with Mushfiqur Rahim’s untimely injury ruling him out of the crucial matches.

Hasaranga’s return to Test cricket was overshadowed by controversy as the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced his suspension following a breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third ODI against Bangladesh. His dissent at an umpire’s decision led to a 50% match-fee fine and three demerit points, taking his total to eight demerit points within 24 months. Consequently, Hasaranga will miss the pivotal ICC World Test Championship Tests against Bangladesh.

The disciplinary action didn’t stop there, as Sri Lankan skipper Kusal Mendis also faced repercussions for his conduct. Mendis received a 50% match-fee fine and three demerit points for abusing umpires at the conclusion of the third ODI, further highlighting the tense atmosphere during the series.

Mushfiqur Rahim Unfortunate Injury

Meanwhile, Bangladesh received a major blow with Mushfiqur Rahim’s unfortunate injury during the third ODI against Sri Lanka resulting in a fractured right thumb. This setback forced Rahim out of the upcoming Test series, depriving Bangladesh of one of their most experienced players and a key figure in their lineup.

With the first Test slated to commence on March 22 in Sylhet, both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are bracing themselves for a challenging encounter. The series holds added significance as part of the 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship cycle, with both teams eager to make their mark after a series of mixed results in the preceding T20I and ODI series.

As preparations intensify for the Test series, the absence of key players on both sides adds an element of unpredictability to the upcoming matches. With Rahim sidelined and Hasaranga suspended, the teams will need to regroup, rethink their strategies, and ensure that they are well-prepared to overcome these challenges and deliver compelling performances on the cricketing stage.
