The much-anticipated second season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is set to commence in Bengaluru on February 23, treating cricket enthusiasts to an exciting opening clash between last year’s finalists, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. The inaugural match will take place at the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium, starting at 7:30 pm.
As outlined by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the second match will feature a face-off between Royal Challengers Bangalore and UP Warriorz. The tournament’s grand finale is scheduled for March 17, preceded by an Eliminator game on March 15, both hosted in Delhi.
In line with previous reports, the WPL’s second season will follow a streamlined schedule, with matches concentrated in two key venues – Bengaluru and Delhi. The Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru will host 11 games until March 4, after which the WPL action will shift to the national capital, Delhi, starting on March 5.
BCCI Opt For a Two Center Approach
Contrary to the initial plan of a home-and-away model akin to the Indian Premier League (IPL), logistical challenges led the BCCI to opt for a two-center approach. The first season was entirely played in Mumbai, and the upcoming edition will maintain this format with matches exclusively in Bengaluru and Delhi.
The 24-day extravaganza promises riveting cricket action, featuring five teams and a total of 22 games. Notably, there will be no doubleheaders, and all matches are scheduled to commence at 7:30 pm. While the majority of games follow a one-day gap between them, certain instances will see teams engaging in back-to-back encounters on consecutive days.
The Delhi leg of the WPL will kick off with a highly anticipated clash between last year’s finalists, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. All matches in the capital will be held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, adding to the cricketing spectacle.
